Relaunched Flickr group

IGPOTY has relaunched its Flickr group. We hope that you can use it to have a look at what everyone is doing and as a way to get some comments about your photos before you decide which ones to enter into the competition.

You could also use it to ask the Igpoty team questions about your photographs - for example  - maybe if you are not sure which category to put it in.

We will also be using to let you know news and views about the competition and exhibition. Enjoy!

IGPOTY at Wakehurst Place

Went down to Wakehurst Place in West Sussex to meet up with the estates team there. The exhibition will be moving there in the next couple of weeks, so we had to choose a good spot for it. Finally chose a place above the stream that leads from the Visitor Centre down to the woods. Wakehurst looks great at the moment as it has a lot of Autumn colour about - I particularly noticed the Acers in various shades of orange red and brown. There's also a huge raft of Cyclamen under a big oak tree- quietly spectacular. So we have to sort out the details before the end of the week.

Clive Nichols tips on photographing trees

Spring, autumn and winter are my favourite times for photographing trees. In spring new leaves begin to unfurl from bare branches, green and fresh. Autumn brings bonfire colours – reds, oranges and rich browns, whilst winter is the time to photograph bare branches and bark close ups.

Beech tree roots, Arley Arboretum, Worcestershire. Pentax 6 x7 55mm wide-angle lens, Fuji Velvia 50 ISO film, ½ second @f22

I often visit arboretums in the autumn as they have good collections of trees. To show the extensive roots of this tree, surrounded by fallen leaves, I used a wide-angle lens on my medium format Pentax camera, pointing the camera downwards towards the ground.

Lakemount, Glanmire, Country Cork, Eire. Nikon F90X with 200mm macro lens. Fuji Velvia ISO 50, 1/25 second @f8

This maple leaf had fallen onto a frond of a New Zealand tree fern below. Colour – the red of the leaf against the complimentary green of the fern – was my primary motivation for the taking the picture. The ‘hot’ red autumnal leaf provides the dominant colour, pushed to the fore by the cooler, apple green of the fern.

Photographing at National Trust properties

Photographing at National Trust properties (England, Wales, Northern Ireland)

The National Trust is pleased to be able to offer photographers the opportunity to take photographs at its properties for entry into International Garden Photographer of the Year..

As part of that opportunity The National Trust would like to make clear certain conditions that apply. These conditions are set out in detail in our Competition Rules. Click here to see the detailed conditions that apply.

Read the detailed terms and conditions carefully.

If interested in shooting at a National Trust property, you will pay for entry to the property, or if a member, show your membership card to gain access. You must obey all other standard National Trust Terms and Conditions of entry.

You must take the access contract with you to the property, and approach a member of the property staff team for them to agree and sign - before any imagery is taken if possible.

You then submit your images to International Garden Photographer of the Year in the usual way.

If your image is shortlisted you will be contacted so that you can send in your completed release forms.

Trees in good shape

The autumn colour (Fall foliage) in Europe is getting into full swing. I have been out this morning not looking up but looking down at some nice shapes of leaves against bark and logs and things like that. It's a lovely day here and there's nothing better than the orange and red of our Liquidamber tree against the bright blue sky. Along the road, my neighbour has a Tulip tree which has wonderful butter yellow leaves - not quite at its best yet but I'll be keeping an eye out for it in the days to come. Here's one from last year.

IGPOTY in Central London

As sponsors of the Portfolio category of the 2009 International Garden Photographer of the Year competition, Calumet Photographic Limited are delighted to be hosting an exhibition of photographs of the 2008 Portfolio finalists. The free exhibition will be held at the Calumet store on Drummond Street from 11 December – 1 January 2009.

Photographs on display will include the immaculate studio shots of autumn leaves entitled Leaves by Portuguese photographer, Henrique Souto. This portfolio of six photographs won Henrique the 2008 Best Portfolio Prize, and illustrates Henrique’s passion for the natural world and above all, trees. Together with the portfolios of the four other finalists, Henrique’s photographs will demonstrate some of the very best in garden photography.
